Los Gigantes is one of the most special areas in western Tenerife, located in the municipality of Santiago del Teide. This coastal town combines tranquillity, a maritime atmosphere and a privileged location by the Atlantic Ocean, making it an ideal destination for those looking to discover a more authentic side of Tenerife, closely connected to nature.

Unlike other tourist areas in the south of the island, Los Gigantes offers a more peaceful setting, with streets by the sea, spectacular views and easy access to some of Tenerife’s most remarkable landscapes. From Los Gigantes, visitors can easily reach the marina, Los Guíos Beach and various points of interest in western Tenerife, making it an excellent base for exploring the island.

Beaches and nature

The area’s great natural landmark is the Los Gigantes Cliffs, impressive volcanic walls that rise above the Atlantic Ocean and form one of the most recognisable landscapes in the Canary Islands. Traditionally known as “The Wall of Hell”, they reach several hundred metres in height at certain points.

Los Guíos Beach, located beside the cliffs, is one of the most special places to enjoy the sea with privileged views. The coastline also features small swimming areas and peaceful spots where visitors can relax in front of the ocean.

Nearby is the Teno Rural Park, one of Tenerife’s best-preserved natural areas. Its mountains, trails, viewpoints and rural landscapes reveal a different side of the island, perfect for those who enjoy photography, hiking and nature.

Things to do in Los Gigantes

One of the must-do experiences is taking a boat excursion to admire the cliffs from the sea. This viewpoint allows visitors to better appreciate the scale of the volcanic walls and discover coastal corners that cannot be reached by road.

Los Gigantes is also one of the best places in Tenerife for whale and dolphin watching. The waters between Tenerife and La Gomera are home to species such as dolphins and pilot whales throughout the year, making boat trips one of the area’s most popular activities.

The Los Gigantes marina is another ideal place for a stroll, to enjoy local cuisine or relax on a terrace overlooking the ocean. Many of the boat excursions exploring Tenerife’s west coast depart from here.

For hiking enthusiasts, the surrounding area offers routes with spectacular scenery, especially towards Teno Rural Park, where traditional paths, small hamlets and unique viewpoints can be discovered.

Los Gigantes’ location makes it easy to discover some of the most interesting places in western Tenerife.

Nearby are Puerto de Santiago and Playa de la Arena, two coastal areas with a relaxed atmosphere, swimming spots and a good selection of restaurants. Playa de la Arena is particularly known for its black volcanic sand and the quality of its waters.

Another must-see destination is Masca, one of Tenerife’s most picturesque villages, set among mountains and ravines. The road leading to it offers one of the island’s most spectacular panoramic routes.

It is also worth visiting Garachico, known for its historic centre, traditional Canarian architecture and natural pools formed by ancient volcanic eruptions.

From Los Gigantes, it is also possible to plan routes to other places of interest such as Costa Adeje, La Caleta or Teide National Park, discovering the great diversity of Tenerife’s landscapes.
