Puerto de la Cruz is an excellent base for exploring Tenerife by car. The Orotava Valley, Garachico, Icod, Anaga and Teide are all realistic day trips if you plan the route around the island’s mountain roads rather than just kilometres on a map.
1. La Orotava and the valley viewpoints
Start with La Orotava’s historic streets, gardens and wooden balconies, then continue to viewpoints over the valley. It is an easy half-day route with plenty of places for a coffee or a slow walk.
2. Icod de los Vinos and Garachico
Follow the north-west coast towards Icod and Garachico. Allow time for the old town, the volcanic coast and the natural pools when sea conditions allow. This is a scenic road rather than a fast one.
3. Teide National Park
The drive from Puerto de la Cruz to Teide is a classic change of scenery: green slopes, pine forest and finally the volcanic caldera. Take layers, fuel up before climbing and check weather and road notices.
4. The north coast at your own pace
Combine small coastal stops, viewpoints and short walks. The north rewards flexibility; clouds and light can change quickly, and a quiet village lunch is often more memorable than trying to tick every stop.
5. La Laguna and Santa Cruz
For a city day, drive to UNESCO-listed La Laguna, then continue to Santa Cruz for museums, shops or the waterfront. Use a car park and explore the historic centres on foot.
6. Anaga Rural Park
Anaga is spectacular but its roads are narrow and winding. Leave plenty of daylight, drive patiently and avoid packing too many stops into one day.
7. The west coast and Los Gigantes
This is a longer outing, but the cliffs and coastal views make it worthwhile. Start early and plan the return before dark.
Practical tips
Use a reliable navigation app, carry water, and allow more time than the map suggests. A hire car gives you the freedom to adapt the route to weather, traffic and the stops you enjoy most.
