If you are planning what to see in north Tenerife, expect a greener, more Atlantic side of the island. Historic towns, laurel forest, volcanic coast and mountain roads make it ideal for a car-based route.
Historic towns
La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna, Icod de los Vinos and Garachico each reward a walk rather than a rushed photo stop. Choose two or three for one day instead of trying to cover the whole north at once.
Coast and natural pools
The north coast has dramatic views and natural pools, but sea conditions are not always suitable for swimming. Follow local signs and flags; a beautiful coast does not automatically mean a safe bathing day.
Forests and viewpoints
Anaga and the upland roads offer remarkable scenery, with cloud forest and changing weather. Bring a layer, keep fuel in the car and allow extra time for bends and occasional low visibility.
A sensible driving plan
Use a hire car to connect the places that interest you most. Start early, choose a realistic loop and leave time for lunch, parking and unplanned viewpoints. The north is better enjoyed slowly.
