La Orotava is one of the most rewarding places to visit in northern Tenerife. Its historic centre, wooden balconies, gardens and viewpoints over the Orotava Valley make it ideal for a slower day away from the resort areas.
Start in the historic centre
Park outside the narrowest streets and walk through the old town. The centre is compact, but the slopes are real, so comfortable shoes make a difference. Look out for traditional Canarian houses, carved balconies and small squares.
Casa de los Balcones and local architecture
The best-known traditional house is a useful introduction to the town’s architecture and crafts. Whether you visit inside or simply admire the façade, it helps explain why La Orotava is so different from Tenerife’s beach resorts.
Gardens and viewpoints
The Victoria Gardens and nearby viewpoints are excellent places to pause. On a clear day you can look across the valley towards Puerto de la Cruz and the Atlantic. Morning and late afternoon usually give the softest light for photographs.
What else to combine with La Orotava
La Orotava works well with Puerto de la Cruz, the botanical garden or a drive up towards Teide National Park. Do not rush the combination: the town is most enjoyable when you leave time for a relaxed walk and lunch.
Visiting tips
Bring a light layer for the north, especially outside summer. Check opening times for individual attractions, use public car parks where indicated and keep the historic centre pedestrian-friendly by avoiding unnecessary driving through narrow streets.
