Updated in 2026. Los Realejos is one of the most complete municipalities in northern Tenerife: a volcanic coastline, walking trails, surfing, viewpoints, major festivals, palm groves, history and a perfect location for combining Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, Icod and Isla Baja.
It is easy to drive straight past because many travellers stay in Puerto de la Cruz or continue towards Garachico. A minor mistake, perhaps, but still a mistake. Los Realejos has some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in the north, particularly around Rambla de Castro and the San Pedro Viewpoint.

What to see in Los Realejos
You cannot understand Los Realejos from a single place. It encompasses mid-altitude countryside, coastline, historic neighbourhoods and natural areas. If you are short on time, concentrate on the coast: Rambla de Castro, San Pedro Viewpoint, Castro Beach and El Socorro. If you have longer, add Realejo Alto, La Cruz Santa and a route through the higher areas.
Rambla de Castro
Rambla de Castro is the municipality’s great natural treasure. WebTenerife describes it as a natural area accessed from the TF-5 near the San Pedro Viewpoint, where there is parking and a track that descends on foot into the protected landscape.
The route combines palm trees, cliffs, Atlantic views, historic remains and a captivating sense of the green north. You do not need to take a very long walk to enjoy it, but comfortable footwear and an unhurried pace are advisable.
San Pedro Viewpoint
San Pedro Viewpoint is a perfect stop even if you are not going walking. Medianías de Tenerife highlights its views from the Tigaiga cliff to the coast of San Juan de la Rambla, as well as the information panels and restaurant nearby.
My advice: if you plan to walk through Rambla de Castro, start here early. Park, see the viewpoint, descend to the trail and then decide how far to walk according to your energy and available time.
El Socorro Beach
El Socorro is a black-sand beach with strong links to surfing. The Los Realejos tourism website explains that surfing and bodyboarding championships take place here, with July, August and September the usual months for major competitions.
Whether it is suitable for swimming depends greatly on the sea. Respect any warning flag. If you go to watch the surfers, walk or have a drink, it is usually a very rewarding outing even without a swim.
Castro Beach and the wild coastline
Castro Beach is one of the most beautiful corners of the Los Realejos coastline, within the Rambla de Castro area. It is reached on foot and has a more natural character than urban beaches. Do not approach it as a convenient beach for a parasol and cooler: it is better suited to a stop during a walk, photographs, scenery and a swim only when the sea permits.
The Los Realejos coast is beautiful, but it is also an exposed Atlantic coastline. Do not turn a picture-postcard view into a reckless decision. Always check the flag, swell and access before swimming.
Realejo Alto, churches and local life
The inland part of the municipality is also worth exploring. Realejo Alto, the Church of Santiago Apóstol, its squares, neighbourhoods and viewpoints reveal a more everyday side of the north. If you have a car, you can combine the town centre, local food and the coast in one long morning.
Cruces y Fuegos de Mayo
Cruces y Fuegos de Mayo is Los Realejos’ best-known festival and is designated a Festival of National Tourist Interest. In 2026, WebTenerife and the municipal programme placed the main events on 2 and 3 May, with crosses decorated by local residents and the eagerly awaited firework rivalry between Calle El Sol and Calle El Medio on the night of 3 May.
The 2026 edition has already taken place. If you are preparing a trip for another year, mark this festival as one of the major dates in the north. However, book accommodation early, arrive in good time and do not improvise parking in the town centre.
Half-day route around Los Realejos
- San Pedro Viewpoint: views and your starting point.
- Rambla de Castro: a walk through palm groves and coastal scenery.
- Castro Beach: a natural stop if the trail and sea conditions permit.
- El Socorro Beach: surfing, black sand and a northern atmosphere.

Full-day route
If you have a car and the whole day, combine Los Realejos with Puerto de la Cruz or La Orotava. For example: spend the morning at Rambla de Castro and El Socorro, have lunch in the area, then visit La Orotava or walk around Playa Jardín and Puerto de la Cruz in the afternoon.
Another beautiful option is to continue towards Icod and Garachico, although you will need an early start and should avoid adding too many places to the map. Tenerife is more enjoyable when you leave room for an unexpected stop.
