For a very peaceful route, Garachico and Isla Baja have that slow-paced side of Tenerife that is hard to resist.<\/p>\n

If you are coming for a week, I would not commit to just one area. I would do something like this: spend the first nights in the north for La Laguna, Anaga, Puerto de la Cruz, Garachico and Icod; spend the last nights in the south for the beach, a boat trip, Mount Teide from Costa Adeje and a convenient return journey if you are flying from Tenerife South.<\/p>\n
This avoids the classic \u201ctoday we are crossing the island again\u201d trip. Tenerife is much more enjoyable when your routes make sense. If you make a north\u2013south return journey every day, you end up feeling as though you have seen a lot of tarmac and very little of the island.<\/p>\n
Where should you hire a car?<\/h2>\n
If you plan to travel between the north and south, a car is what gives you genuine freedom. You can collect it at your arrival airport and return it wherever suits you, subject to availability. If you only want to stay in one area and take a single excursion, you could also use a bus or organised tour, but a car wins easily when it comes to discovering towns, viewpoints and less obvious beaches.<\/p>\n
That said, choose your car sensibly. A compact is perfect for two people. For a family with luggage, it is better not to choose something too small. And if your accommodation is in a historic centre or an area with narrow streets, you do not need to hire a boat on wheels.<\/p>\n
